The electronic medical record can be very helpful in order to improve your efficiency. The only issue may be that you will have to learn the complex world of the EPIC hyperspace at Parkland and CPRS at the VA. Our recommendation is that you play with the systems as much as you can to get an idea of what is out there and what can help you, however, you will not have too much time to get used to it. So pay attention on your first EMR orientation and come back to resources like this to refresh your memory as you jump from VA to St Paul to Parkland.
In this section we would like to help you get familiar with how to use the three most common order sets in the inpatient setting, even more simple than that we want you to remember that when ordering any of the following you need to think about using order sets instead of plain order. You should remember that every time that you will start somebody on Insulin, Heparin or Blood Products you MUST use these order sets. At the VA the Heparin order set can be especially troublesome because you have to do a couple of extra steps (video available).
